How to make Caramelized Onion
Caramelized Onions are the result of cooking onions until their sugars brown and create new flavors, according to www.chefsteps.com.
Cooking time: 40-60 minutes
You'll need:
- Large onions: 4-5
- Butter: 2 tablespoons
- Wine (either red or white): 2 tablespoons
- Balsamic vinegar: to taste
The recipe:
Slice the onions in half, then slice in thin round pieces. Place the butter in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat, add the onion and mix well until it gets fully covered with butter. Stir regularly to avoid burning the onion. If you see signs of burning, reduce the heat.
Through the cooking process you'll see the onion becoming transparent over the first ten minutes and they will begin to caramelize after 20-25 minutes which is when you might want to adjust the heat again to avoid burning the onion. After a total of 50 minutes of cooking, the onion should be completely caramelized and golden brown and you should observe caramelized sugar formations on your frying pan.
When ready, pour over the wine, balsamic vinegar and sprinkle salt to taste, then serve.
