Celebrating Romania’s Independence Day – December 1st
December 1st marks a very special day for Romania – it is their Independence Day! This day is celebrated throughout the country with parades, music, and festive food. But what exactly does this day mean for Romania? Let’s take a look at the history behind it and how the country came to be united.
On December 1, 1918, the National Assembly of Romanians convened in Alba Iulia and proclaimed the Union of Transylvania with Romania. This event is what put Romania on the map and gave them their independence. However, this did not come easy. There were many people who fought and died for their country to get to this point. We must remember them and their sacrifice as we celebrate Romania’s Independence Day.
How Romania United
Throughout its history, Romania has gone through many changes. It has been divided and conquered, but each time it has managed to persevere. In 1859, two principalities – Moldavia and Wallachia – unite to form the Romanian state. Then, in 1862, Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza becomes the ruler of both countries and declares Bucharest the new capital city
In 1886, King Carol I ascends to the throne and brings about a period of stability for the country. He introduces reforms that help spur economic growth and industrialization begins to take hold. During World War I, Romania initially declares neutrality but then joins the Allies in 1916 when Austria-Hungary annexes land that belongs to Romania.
After years of war and bloodshed, finally on December 1st 1918, the National Assembly of Romanians convened in Alba Iulia and proclaimed the Union of Transylvania with Romania. This was a monumental moment in Romanian history as it solidified their independence from other countries. The following year, Bessarabia unites with Romania as well which further strengthens the country.
Romania has come a long way since 1859 when Moldavia and Wallachia first united. It has been through many highs and lows but has always managed to stand tall. This Independence Day, let us remember all those who fought for our country and made sacrifices so that we could be free. Happy Independence Day, Romania!
